For this week I worked with Tom, we decided on a hyper pop/phonk inspired song; this is the style of music I usually work within and Tom was excited to do something in this genre as he had never worked within it before. Together we decided on what the song should sound like using reference tracks and then we decided on what synth sounds we would use together. We also agreed to have a large focus on anime samples within the song, to add to the world we were building. Tom went away and came back with the beat, I had no complaints and nothing to change, I thought it was perfect and would be easy to write to. After sitting with the track and working out the melody I decided that I would make use of my Persephone personality, this being the persona I have curated for my own music and performances. This character is a sexy demon girl, inspired by anime and the mythology of the name. I use a cutesy voice but the lyrics I use are very sexually aggressive giving a contrast people seem to enjoy. I decided this track would portray a party girl who knows everyone wants her but is just using them for a good time; as this track was very anime inspired I used the term gyaru throughout the song, this is a Japanese subculture focused on an overly westernised style and party like behaviour so fit very well with the content of the song. I revised the lyrics about three times, tweaking my rhymes and making sure I would be on beat. This is something I always struggle with and this song was no exception, however I do feel I did okay on this track. I used a verse chorus structure for this track, coming up with a catchy chorus to repeat, and also had a large focus on rhyming due to the vocal style of rapping I was using. I also used a conversational melody as I feel this connects the listener more to what is happening within the song. The delivery of the vocals needed to be over the top, cute but aggressive; I needed to use a lot of energy to make the vocal fit with the anime samples, the voice I use took a bit of practice, my accent becoming more americanised and the character bleeding through to make the song believable. Overall I am very happy with this track and found it to be quite easy to write and sing for, mostly due to Tom’s exceptional production skills.
