For the first week of songwriting class I was paired with Hugo and Billy; after some discussion we settled on utilising my usual sexually charged style within my music, the boys being excited about hearing what I would do with the lyrics. Billy and Hugo made the beat with me sitting in and helping make decisions about what sounds to use and where the beat should go. We all agreed to put a big focus on the moaning sample we found, it serving as a rhythmic effect within the song. At first Hugo made a more R&B inspired beat, myself and Billy did not like this, agreeing to go in a different direction that more suits my vocal and lyrical style. Billy came up with the final beat and I wrote the lyrics, I decided to go with an aggressive personality to fit the trap elements of the song. I came up with the story of a girl who’d been cheated on so slept with her boyfriends best friend, the lyrics came quite easily once I worked out the melody and found the story. I find this style to be more about finding a rhyme than telling an eloquent story however. On a trap beat people just want something fun and vaguely aggressive to sing along to; the lyrics inspired a lot of excitement in the people I showed so I am confident they fit well. With my vocals I am used to my slower character rapping or plain singing so getting the vocals right took some time, I struggled with timing and breath control but after many takes I think I achieved an adequate performance, though it is not perfect and I do feel with more time and practice I could give better. I do however think that I correctly portrayed the character I created; this is something I put a big focus on in my music, utilising the idea of acting, creating a world and person, correctly portraying the emotions they’re feeling. To make this come through in the vocals in this song I needed to sound angry yet self assured, cocky but not grating, and I think I achieved this. Overall this is a good track I am very proud of, the only thing I would fix is my vocals, particularly my rhythm and the mix.
